No motor show has hosted more BMW world premieres than Geneva. The Swiss event’s January timing — bridging the holiday lull and the spring buying season — has made it the ideal platform for unveiling cars destined to define model years.

1955: The 507 Roadster

BMW’s first major Geneva moment came with the 507, a brutally handsome roadster designed by Albrecht Graf Goertz. Only 252 were ever built, yet the car single-handedly convinced the world that BMW could make desirable sports cars.

1983: The M635 CSi

The 1980s saw BMW use Geneva to introduce its M division to a wider audience. The M635 CSi, with its naturally aspirated 3.5-litre M88 straight-six, arrived in Switzerland and left as a legend. Contemporary road tests described it as “the most refined fast car in the world.”

1999: The E46 M3

The Geneva 1999 show is still discussed in reverent tones among enthusiasts. The E46 M3’s debut caused a queue at the stand that wrapped around the Palexpo hall. Order books for the UK alone filled within 48 hours of opening.

2019: The X7

BMW’s most recent landmark Geneva moment came with the full-sized X7, which combined seven-seat practicality with a design boldness that polarised critics but resonated with buyers. Global deliveries began within six months of the show.
